The terms
- Gross vehicle weight (GVW): the maximum the vehicle is allowed to weigh when loaded, as shown on its plate.
- Kerb weight: the empty weight with fuel and driver.
- Payload: roughly GVW minus kerb weight.
- Axle weight: the limit on each axle. You can overload an axle without exceeding the total.
- Gross train weight: the combined weight of a vehicle and trailer.
Why the thresholds matter
- 3,500 kg: above this you generally need an operator licence, a tachograph in most cases, and an annual test.
- 7,500 kg: a common step for driving licence category.
- Larger vehicles: need the full category C or C+E licence and Driver CPC.
Overloading
Overloading risks fines, a prohibition, higher wear and worse braking. Know the plate figures for every vehicle and trailer, and weigh when in doubt.
Record it
Add the vehicle type and notes in Kovi so the right check and plate details are with the vehicle.
