The standard
The Department for Transport publishes the Code of Practice on the safety of loads on vehicles. It sets out good practice that courts and enforcers refer to. Read the current version.
Basics
- Weight: keep within the vehicle's and axle limits, and spread it sensibly.
- Restraint: use enough straps or chains, rated for the load, in good condition.
- Blocking and friction: put the load against headboards or bulkheads where you can, and use anti-slip mats.
- Curtains and doors: closed and locked. Curtains alone are not restraint for heavy loads unless the body is designed and rated for it.
- Tipping bodies: sheet loose loads and make sure tailgates are secure.
Before moving
Walk round, check the load again, then re-check after the first few miles and after each stop.
Record issues
If straps are damaged or a curtain tears, report it as a defect and take the equipment out of use. In Kovi the driver can add a photo and a note, and the office can see it straight away.
