Working at height on lorries: avoiding falls

Climbing on a trailer or a load to sheet it is one of the more dangerous jobs in haulage. There are safer ways to do it.

The hierarchy of control

  1. Avoid it. Use curtainsiders, roller covers or fixed sheeting systems so nobody needs to climb.
  2. Prevent falls. Use gantries, loading platforms with guard rails, or mobile access steps.
  3. Reduce the risk. Use fall arrest where you cannot avoid height, with training and a rescue plan.

Everyday sense

Check the kit

Report damaged steps, grab handles, ladders and sheeting gear in the daily check. A broken step is a defect, not an inconvenience.

HSE publishes guidance on work at height and on falls from vehicles. Read it for your own operation.
