Who needs a test
Goods vehicles and trailers over 3,500 kg gross plated weight generally need an annual test at an approved site. Book through GOV.UK and keep an eye on the plating certificate.
Before you go
- Fix every open defect from daily checks and PMIs.
- Clean the vehicle, especially the chassis and brake areas, so examiners can see.
- Check all lights, markers and reflectors.
- Check tyres, including condition and tread across the whole width.
- Check mudguards, spray suppression, number plates and underrun bars.
- Check for fluid leaks and exhaust condition.
- Check air system for leaks and the brake performance against your last brake test.
- Check seat belts, mirrors, wipers and horn.
Bring
The booking confirmation, the previous test certificate, plating certificate and vehicle registration details. Leave the vehicle with a driver who knows it.
Use the history
If a vehicle has had repeated defects of one type, tackle it before the test. A searchable history shows the pattern.
