Coupling and uncoupling trailers safely

Most coupling incidents come from rushing a routine job. A fixed sequence prevents them.

Coupling

  1. Check the trailer: brakes applied, legs down and level, no damage to the kingpin or front plate.
  2. Align the unit and reverse slowly. Do not rely on mirrors alone if you are unsure.
  3. Stop before the kingpin engages and check height and alignment.
  4. Engage the fifth wheel and listen for the lock.
  5. Do a tug test with the trailer brakes still on, to prove the coupling holds.
  6. Check the locking mechanism visually: jaws closed and safety catch in place.
  7. Connect air lines and the electrical cable, and secure them where they will not chafe or drag.
  8. Raise the landing legs fully and secure the handle.
  9. Release the trailer brake, check lights, and do a final walk round.

Uncoupling

  1. Park on firm, level ground.
  2. Apply the trailer brake and chock wheels if needed.
  3. Lower the legs until they take the weight, with the surface able to support it.
  4. Disconnect and stow air lines and the cable.
  5. Release the coupling and pull away slowly.

Never

Never go under a trailer while it is not supported. Never rely on one hand check of the lock. Report damaged couplings and parts as defects with a photo.
