With the engine running
- Watch the air pressure gauges rise to working pressure in a reasonable time.
- Listen for hissing leaks around the vehicle and trailer.
- Check the low-pressure warning works, and that it goes off at normal pressure.
- Check the handbrake or parking brake holds.
Walkaround
- Hoses and couplings: no chafing, cracks or damage.
- Brake chambers and linkages visible: nothing loose, bent or missing.
- Trailer air lines connected, with no leaks.
- Wheels and drums or discs for obvious damage or heat.
Moving off
Test the brakes at walking pace before you join traffic. They should work evenly. If the vehicle pulls to one side, feels spongy or the pedal travels too far, stop and report it.
Do not guess
If you hear a leak or the warning stays on, do not drive. Report with details and let a qualified technician decide.
Technicians carry out the proper brake tests. See PMI vs daily check.
